2018 Met Gala Monday

Met Gala Monday is without a doubt my favourite red carpet day of the year. This year the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala is asking guests to dress in their 'Sunday Best' to celebrate the new exhibit: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination curated by Andrew Bolton. And if you ask me, this theme has all the makings of a great red carpet, given fashions long history of intrigue with catholocism.

So as I sit here and watch E's live from the red carpet coverage, apart from being irritated by almost everything Brad Goreski has to say (we get it, you know all the stylists and people who work for the brands #namedrop) I'm so far really impressed with the looks coming out. I mean the Met Gala is the ultimate opportunity for custom creativity and haute couture - this is not about picking pretty/sexy looks like 'oh that's nice, I totally want to channel her look to the next fragrance launch red carpet I have coming up' this is real farshun with an actual element of depth - shocking I know but true. So now with that in mind, lets talk looks.

SJP, loves a theme, lives for it so it made perfect sense to hit up Dolce & Gabbana, the catholic loyalists. Loved her headpiece, so ridiculous but so relevant. Could have given the 80's blue shadow a miss though, it 's not like she didn't already have enough going on.

Riri, another one who loves a theme dressing opp and I've gotta give her props for always living up to the theme and embracing a designers creativity. John Galliano for Margiela is her spiritual match made in heaven with this look. From the pope hat to the embellishment, every element of this is epic. The mini skirt seems to be a Rihanna relevant touch and the soft jacket silhouette balances the traditional with the modern. I usually hate jackets worn off one shoulder, but this is probably the only time it's ok to do so - if you're Rihanna wearing JG for Margiela on the Met Gala red carpet. 

Kendall looks beautiful (and I generally don't find her that beautiful) and I'm obsessed with this Off White look, but I'm just not convinced it's enough for the Met Gala. I love love love this, but would have like to see her take on something a bit more experimental and boundary pushing for the Gala. It seems the commercial sensibility still ruled when selecting here. But can we give special mention to the gloves, cos I love these.

I think Kim K channeling J Lo green Versace dress hair and makeup, looks like Kim K, if not a bit like a brunette fembot. It's no surprise/secret that her body is her ultimate asset, so why wouldn't you cover it in tight, shimmering gold. The crucifixes seemed a little haphazardly placed, kinda just plonked on, but generally she looks good in her Kim K way. Would have liked to see something a bit more unexpected though, maybe like a red wig.

Em Rata - Hot, great makeup but snooze, seen it all before on Kate Moss in her 2009 Marc Jacobs iconic gold gown.

Blake Lively bores me to tears every day of the week, so it was nice to see her in something marginally interesting. And I do love a train, so yes she got it right, but it's still not my fav. I can't take away from the bodice embellishment and design details though, Donatella has done an amazing job but for me, there's just still something daggy about Blake, sorry I know I'll  probably lose friends saying that. 

Gisele. Lazy. Relying on her star power and her BF. She could have worn this dress to any movie premier. Disappointing from such a fashion icon.

Kylie Jenner - yes we know, she just had a baby and she looks great. But is she Met Gala approps, me thinks no. I hate the glasses too, they're unnecessary for her look so it feels like she's wearing them in an arrogant way. 

I don't what was going on in Scar Jo's styling suite, but this this is a hot mess. Her team have managed to age her by about 40 years. Hair is dreadful and while gown is beautiful colour, it does nothing for her. This is my biggest fail of the day.

Hailee Steinfeld (I had to google her, I don't know her or what she does) was given a stunning dress by Prabal Gurung but let it down with poor styling. What could have been really sophisticated and glam was cheapened by the tiara and messy hair combo, reminiscent of a hen, seven vodka-red bulls down at 1am. Gross.

Cara D. Love. Dior is heaven on her, and I love the risque damsel imprisoned vibe she's running. There's something very Handmaids tale about this and I can't put on my finger on why, but anyway, love.

Stella Maxwell is running the hot model looking hot vibe and I don't hate it. Her Moschino dress seems a little token (but thats Moschino so) and if you look really closely, the beading and embellishment is intensley beautiful. She looks as good as a model should.

Ruby Rose looks swell in red, but the sash seemed like an afterthought. It feels like she was on her way out of the hotel and Tommy Hilfiger came running out with the sash, crying 'Ruby, wait! I forgot it's a Catholic themed thing. Here, quick pop this around your waist'.

Diane Kruger and her massive train make it to the best dressed list. This colour is perfection on her and the headwear on anyone else would be too much, but on D Krugs it just works.

Zoe Kravitz is sickly hot in YSL. Seriously, this is the definition of slay.

KBos can do no wrong. She's also one of the only few celebs who could arrive in a wedding dress and still make it look understated but theme relevant. Beautiful.

Bella Hadid works a serious glare better than anyone in the business so this look is right up her alley. Fierce and structured with pope references that don't go too far, I love.

Zendaya is one of my best dressed for the day in this silver Versace situations. Channelling total  Joan of Arc vibes, she nails the brief and works the best ginger bob I've ever seen. Hate the shoes, but fortunately the dress more than makes up for them.

Love JLo in this Balmain beaded gown, but feel like the train could have been bigger for a bit of extra oomph. Also loving her slicked lob, she's another anti-aging phenomenon.

I think Sienna might just be my fav. I love her playful take on the theme, made perfect by her headwear and accessories. Simple, chic and nude eyebrows are working a treat with this look.
